Trivandrum: Bekal and its famed 17th century fort are ready to emerge from the periphery of Kerala’s tourism map to take the centre stage as infrastructure projects worth crores of rupees designed to make it India’s first sustainable and planned beach destination get off the ground. Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy will inaugurate an intensive ‘Know Bekal’ promotional campaign on May 10 in Bekal to showcase this pristine destination and its many attractions, both nationally and internationally.

Kochi: Just six months after starting their services from Kochi, the Chennai based Amet Cruises is all set to close its operations here because of poor patronage. Amet Majesty, the vessel which the company was using for its services from Kochi, will sail on May 27, 2012 for a trip to Lakshadweep and then head for its base in Chennai. Amet Majesty started its services in October 2011 and was operating Kochi – Maldives (four nights), Kochi – Lakshadweep (two nights) and one weekend services.

The company also had a 40% growth in export turnover during the financial year ended March 31. The exports touched Rs.527 crore as against Rs.377 crore in the last financial year.
