Trivandrum: The results of a survey conducted by research organisation, C fore show that there is huge public support for the proposed high speed rail project cutting across cast, community and class lines. The 430 km high speed railway line (HSR) is proposed to be built between Kochuveli in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur.
C fore conducted the survey in 11 districts of Kerala to assess the public perception about the proposed High Speed Rail project by the Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (KHSRCL). The survey was conducted between November 23, 2016 and January 14, 2017. In all 13,447 adults representing various castes and communities were interviewed from 110 assembly constituencies. The survey has margin of error of 1 percent at 95 percent confidence level.
Briefing the media, Premchand Palety, Chief Executive of C fore said, “73 percent of the respondents were aware of the project and of them, 88 percent approved of the project. 82 percent of those who were unaware of the project also approved of the same when the interviewer explained to them about the proposed high speed rail project. In all, 86 percent of Kerala adults approved of the project. The approval rating was over 80 percent in each of the eleven districts where the survey was conducted.”
According to the survey results, the main reason given by respondents for approval of the project was saving of time in commuting from one part of Kerala to another. Many respondents also believed that the project will be a catalyst for development of the State and will also result in decreasing pollution as better public transport will result in less number of private vehicles being used which cause pollution.
Majority of those respondents who opposed the project opined that the project will displace large number of people and also will lead to acquisition of private land because of which they were against the project.
The Rs. 1,27,849 crores project is aimed at making travel hassle-free and at reducing congestion on State roads. The Detailed Project Report on the HSR was prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
