Trivandrum: “Improve your skills and live a life of your dreams. Everyone cannot be an entrepreneur but you can be an expert in your area of specialisation. The bottom line is skill development”. This was the key takeaway from an interactive session with business tycoon, Vikram Kirloskar, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Thiruvananthapuram today.
Vikram, who is the Deputy Chairman of CII Southern Region, was on a brief visit to the capital city to chair the CII Kerala State Council meeting. He also had a meeting with the Chief Secretary to Government of Kerala, S M Vijayanad IAS.
In his interaction with a select audience comprising of CII members and non-members, Vikram shared his experience of skill development in Toyota Kirloskar Motor and how it helped them improve the efficiency of the plant while focussing on quality. “Quality, cost and delivery are what differentiates you from your competitor. With automation, you could reach certain levels but beyond that, it the skill of the employees that help you attain greater heights. It’s a mix of technical and soft skills that makes one a specialist.” He also called for a change in the mindset to accept all skilled labour and the dignity associated with it.
He also outlined the key focus areas of CII – Ease of doing business, MSME engagement, Membership engagement, Skill development and Startupreneurs – a five point agenda for engaging with members across the Southern States. Startupreneurs would be a forum similar to Young Indians (Yi) and Indian Women Network (IWN) for the benefit of start-ups.
V P Nandakumar, Chairman, and G Krishna Kumar, Vice Chairman, CII Kerala State Council; and Premal Dave, Deputy Director, CII Kerala were among those present during the interactive session.
