CISSA to organise seminar on e-Waste Management

Trivandrum: The Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and Clean Kerala Company Ltd. will jointly organize a seminar on e-Waste Management & Citizen Responsibilities August 11, 2015.

Minister for Urban Affairs, Shri Manjalamkuzhi Ali will inaugurate the seminar to be held at the Priyadarshini Planetarium Hall at PMG in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to a press note from CISSA, the mammoth generation of e-waste has created a new e-waste stream in the country containing obsolete, end-of-life electrical and electronics equipments discarded after their intended use. Lower prices for many electrical goods have increased global demand for many products that eventually end up as e-waste. The disposal of electronic-waste is a growing problem, because electronic equipments frequently contain hazardous substances.

Public is still not aware of the gravity of the environmental problems caused by e-waste. E-waste Rules were notified by the government, but public is largely ignorant about them. Kerala is a forerunner among the states in the adoption and application of information technology and e-governance activities resulting in increased use of electronic equipments. Along with that the problem of electronic waste is growing hazardously. Considering the severity of the problem, it is imperative that awareness be created and certain management options be adopted to handle the e-waste, which may cause grave threat to our health and environment.

Dr. C Suresh Kumar, Secretary General, CISSA said, “It is to create the right awareness among public about the need and importance of proper management of e-waste that the seminar is being organized. Students, teachers and youth club members could attend this seminar.”
