Trivandrum: BSNL Kerala Circle as rolled out public Wi-Fi hotspots in Kochi and Kozhikode as part of the Prime Minister’s ambitious Digital India programme. The hotspots, ten in Ernakulam and three in Kozhikode were commissioned on July 01, 2015.
Giving details, M S S Rao, CGM, BSNL Kerala Circle said, “BSNL in association with Quadgen Wireless Solutions would be providing Wi-Fi hotspots at 1,113 locations across Kerala in a phased manner. 135 locations with 585 Access points have been indentified in Thiruvananthapuram and this would be started based on the support from local authorities.”
The first 30 minutes in a day for maximum three consecutive occasions in a month for the same mobile number will be free. After that it will be a paid option. Customers can pay for the Wi-Fi network online or through physical recharge coupons available at these locations.
Further briefing the media on Digital India initiatives, he said, “BSNL is proud to be part of this revolutionary project and hopes to give the best services to the customers. Kerala is the first and only State to connect all Block headquarters and Gram Panchayats in India under this programme using the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN). This would enable enhanced bandwidth for e-Governance, e-Commerce, e-health and e-Education.
He also added that the Phase I of replacing old Digital Circuit switches with Next Generation Network (NGN) will be completed this month. As part of Digital India week nine BTSs will be commissioned for expanding the mobile network. New Broadband plans have also been announced. Melas promoting free roaming with free SIMs and unlimited free night calling from BSNL landline are also being conducted.
Apart from the free national roaming introduced from June 15, 2015, BSNL has also rolled out free National Mobile Number Portability (NMNP) from July 03. Mobile banking services and cell broadcast based services called ‘BSNL Buzz’ as also been launched.
K Kulanthaivel, PGM (Finance) said, BSNL Kerala Circle has been performing exceptionally well as compared to other circles. The circle as seen a 4.76% increase in revenue in first quarter of 2015-16 as compared to the first quarter of the last financial year.
