Trivandrum: A veritable feast of music, dance, percussion, painting and martial-arts programmes from the modern, traditional, folk and classical genres of Kerala will add to the festive flavour, as the State Tourism Department organises Onam Week from September 05-11, 2014.
Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the State-level celebrations in the capital which will host the programmes in as many as 29 venues in and around the city, including the banks of Vellayani Lake, Tourism Minister Shri A P Anil Kumar announced at a press meet.
Nishagandhi Auditorium, where the inauguration will be held, is among the three major venues – the others being Central Stadium and Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan.
The main venue, Nishagandhi, will host on the opening day an experimental ensemble. Named ‘Journey of Rhythm’, the programme will feature Padma Shri Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar (chenda), Alappuzha Karunamurthy (tavil), U Rajesh (mandolin), Prakash Ulleri (keyboard), Mahesh Mani (tabla and mridangam) and Manjunath.
The leading shows at the fete include dance by actress Padma Shri Shobana, music by Padma Bhushan Dr. K J Yesudas, M G Sreekumar and G Venugopal and magic by Gopinath Muthukad, besides plays by frontline theatre groups. A food festival being organised by KTDC is another key feature of the week-long event.
More than 50 folk art form from the Malabar region, such as ‘Velakali’, ‘Parayanthullal’, ‘Theyyam’ and ‘Poothanum Thirayum’ will be among the main attractions of the Onam celebrations this year. Central Stadium will host mega shows by various media houses.
Bapuji Library at Peroorkada, Public Office vicinity and Poojapura Maidan will be venues for ganamela. Bharath Bhavan, too, will host ganamela, besides folk arts. Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan’s open-air venue will stage group dance, while it will be solo dances at the Koothambalam.
Health Minister, Shri V S Sivakumar will switch on the city illumination today and Tourism Minister, Shri A P Anil Kumar will unfurl the Onam ‘flag’. An amount of Rs. 1.5 crores will be spent by the Department for the event, along with other sponsorships.
Tourism Secretary, Suman Billa; Director, P I Sheik Pareeth; Additional Director (General), T V Anupama; Palode Ravi and Balu Kiriyath were present at the press conference.
