UAE to set up Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram


Trivandrum: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will set up its Consulate General in Kerala. This was announced by Mohamed Sultan Abdalla Al Owais, Ambassador of the UAE to India, at the ‘UAE – Kerala: Partners in Growth’ meet held today in Thiruvananthapuram.

In his address, the Ambassador said that UAE has finalised the decision to set up a Consulate General in Trivandrum. “The Consulate General would be operational in the next two to three months. The new Consulate is expected to boost the trade between Kerala and UAE as it would help more investment to flow from UAE to Kerala. We will also be able to offer more services to the people travelling to UAE”, he added.

In his remarks, Union Minister of State for HRD, Shri Shashi Tharoor said, “The opening of UAE’s Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram is the fulfilment of a long time promise. With this, Kerala gets recognition of its long term association with UAE. It is a recognition and applause of the sterling contribution of the people of Kerala in UAE. I am sure this would also encourage more nationals of UAE to visit Kerala and enjoy its beauty. It also cements the growing international stature of Thiruvananthapuram.” He also added that Sri Lanka is expected to announce the opening of their honorary Consulate in Trivandrum soon.

Welcoming UAE’s decision to open a Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy said, “A large number of Keralaites are working in UAE and we also have a close connection with UAE in trade and commerce. We acknowledge the role played by UAE Government in the development activities in Kerala especially in Vallarpadam port and SmartCity Kochi projects. The Consulate would benefit both the job seekers and tourists who want to visit UAE.”

Minister for Non Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA), Shri K C Joseph and M A Yousuf Ali, Managing Director of UAE based EMKE LuLu Group; were among those present.

The new Consulate will be of immense help people of the Kerala who want to go to the UAE for work. Currently, they have to get their documents certified by the UAE Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate in Mumbai. Out of the 22 lakhs Indian expats in UAE more than 15 lakhs are from Kerala.
