Nigerian delegation in Kerala to study Indian rubber sector

Kottayam: A team of nine officials and smallholders from Nigeria has arrived in Kerala to visit Rubber Board and rubber estates and smallholdings in India. The visit is under the Rubber Project of International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) funded by Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) with IRSG as the supervisory body. The team is headed by Dr. Timothy Unuigboje, Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN).

India is a member state of both CFC and IRSG and Nigeria is a fraternal member state in IRSG. The Rubber Board is extending logistics support in arranging the group tour. RRIN is a fraternal institute of Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) in International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB).

The group tour would cover guided visits to the Rubber Board of India including its research and training institutes and also smallholders, processing factories, cooperatives and other grower forums and rubber roller manufacturing units. The delegation had a meeting with Sheela Thomas IAS, Chairperson of Rubber Board at its headquarters in Kottayam today.

Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN) was established in 1961 at Iyanomo as Rubber Research Station of the then Western Region. The Institute was taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1973 with a merger of the Demonstration Centre of then Eastern Nigeria located at Akwete. RRIN is the only government agency in Nigeria mandated to conduct research into production and development of natural rubber (NR).
