Trivandrum: Riding on a spurt in European visitors to the state, the Kerala Tourism is looking across the Atlantic to significantly increase the number of foreign arrivals in the state.
Three road shows are being organised in major cities across the United States this month as Kerala Tourism enters the American market in a big way. The first road show was held in New York on October 21, Chicago hosted the second on October 22, which will be followed by the last road show in Los Angeles on October 24.
“The United States is the fourth major market for Kerala Tourism after the United Kingdom, France and Germany,” said Tourism Minister, Shri A P Anilkumar, who is leading the delegation of government and industry representatives from the state. “An increase in arrivals of visitors from the biggest economy in the world will be a significant factor for the growth of tourism in the state,” he added.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Smt Preneet Kaur attended the road show in New York, which witnessed the participation of 58 members from the US travel and tourism trade sector. The highlight of the event was a presentation on the top tourist attractions in ‘God’s Own Country’ by Tourism Secretary, Suman Billa IAS.
A Mohiniyattam performance was also staged on the occasion giving a peep into the deep-rooted traditions and culture of Kerala. This is the first time that the Kerala Tourism is organising road shows in the United States. Tourist arrivals in Kerala from the US went up last year to 57,807 from 55,741 in 2011.
“Americans are one of the top global travellers and therefore it is only logical that Kerala Tourism is making inroads into the vast market offered by the United States,” said Suman.
The industry participants from Kerala are the Kumarakom Lake Resort, RAXA Collective, Intersight Tours & Travels, Kerala.com Travel Division, The Travel Planners, Lotus DMC, Easy Tours of India and Ayurvedamana Properties. Air India is sponsoring free economy class round trip tickets to the winners of lucky draws being held in each venue of the road shows. The lucky draw winners get a free 10-day holiday in Kerala.
