Trivandrum: The Kerala State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society Ltd. (Hantex) is planning to achieve a sales target of Rs.25 crores during this year’s Ramzan- Onam festive season. This was announced by the Industries Minister, Shri P K Kunhalikutty while inaugurating the State- wide Ramzan – Onam sales at the Hantex main showroom in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Minister also said Hantex would put up exhibitions in all the Districts during Ramzan- Onam fairs and would also open 130 outlets across Kerala to achieve the sales target. “The Government would increase the assistance given to Weavers Co-operative Societies with an objective to provide quality clothes to people at a reasonable price,” he added.
In order to revitalise the textile sector in the State, a comprehensive development strategy for the Handloom sector was under the active consideration of the Government. New marketing and promotion activities would soon be introduced.
Hantex, the apex society of over 450 primary Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies, was formed in 1961 with the objective of organising the handloom industry in the State on sound commercial basis. Hantex now has 173 showrooms and could achieve a steady progress in procurement of textiles and sales in the recent past.
As part of a Central package, the Ministry of Textiles is devising a proposal for giving concession to the industry, so as to ease the financial liabilities of Hantex. The handloom textile industry, which once happened to be a leading source of employment, is now in a dismal condition for several reasons.
