KSCADC launches Fish Maid products with CIFT


Trivandrum: Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) and Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) under the National Agricultural Innovative Project (NAIP) have come together to create a brand of value added products called ‘Fish Maid’. Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy launched the ‘Fish Maid’ products at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on July 17, 2012.

Fish Burger, Mayo Wrap, Dounuts, Pesce Pane, Munchy Bites, Sandwich, Noodles, Chikuwa, Date Delight, Lollipop, Cheesy Treat, Cute Tots, Twister,  Sweet Heart, Dumblings, Twister, Cutlet, Fish Roll, Kofta, Manchurian, Purse, Wrap, Samosa and Fish Roll are few of the 25 odd ‘Gen Next’ products. The Centralized production centre of KSCADC at Kollam will be the nerve centre of production and these will be sold through 100 kiosks to be set up across Kerala.

In his address, Speaker Shri G Karthikeyan said that these products would go a long way to help people in the coastal areas, especially women. Fisheries Minister Shri K Babu said that NABARD will extend help to set up the Fish Maid kiosks which were announced in the last budget. He added that these products had yielded excellent feed back during test marketing during the International Aqua fair.

Dr. K Ambadi, MD, KSCADC said, “This is an innovative business model to address the most critical challenges in the post-harvest management of fish. Here the long standing challenge of fish wastage to the tune of 20-30% of fish catch as trash and spoilage is transformed into an opportunity for value addition, there by increasing the income of fisher folk, providing employment to women Self Help groups and entrepreneurs and augmenting the nutritional value of food products offered to consumers.”

KSCADC plans to market Fish Maid products, dried fish and dressed fish products through the kiosks. The product technology, developed by CIFT with help from World Bank, enables to keep them under deep freeze conditions for 6 months. KSCADC is already in understanding with KTDC for marketing the products through KTDC outlets. Here customized products will be supplied as per the requirements of KTDC.

Ministers, MLAs, Officials, Media persons and other invitees enjoyed a tasting session of the new products after the launch.
