SP Medifort leads brain & spine surgery treatment

Thiruvananthapuram: The city-based SP Medifort Hospital has made breakthroughs in brain and spine surgery treatment, utilising outstanding clinical expertise, futuristic technology, and world-class infrastructure that meets JCI standards.

In the context of increasing complications caused by diseases related to the brain and spine, an awareness programme related to the advancements in surgical technologies in the region was organised under the leadership of eminent neurosurgeons, Dr Girish Menon, Dr Sushant S, and spine specialist, Dr Ashok Thomas.

Interacting with the media, Dr. Girish said, the main focus is on the importance of recognising early symptoms, modernising treatment methods, and raising awareness from traditional open surgeries to minimally invasive (less invasive) techniques. He added that minimally invasive surgery was available for Parkinson’s, Epilepsy and Psychiatry cases, including OCD.

Dr Sushant said, experts have stated that persistent back pain, weakness in the limbs, numbness, loss of body balance, prolonged headaches, and changes in speech or vision can be early warning signs of brain and spinal cord diseases. They have stated that timely specialist examination and accurate diagnosis are crucial for the success of treatment and improvement in the quality of life.

The panel also explained the diverse treatment options available today, ranging from traditional treatments to minimally invasive spine surgeries and modern brain surgery techniques. The experts said that treatment decisions are made based on the patient’s condition, overall health, and stage of the disease.

Talking about the advancements in spine surgery, doctors said that the shift from traditional open surgeries to minimally invasive techniques is promising for patients in this field. This has significantly reduced muscle damage, bleeding, hospital stay, and recovery time. Advanced imaging and navigation technologies have increased the accuracy and safety of the surgery.

Talking about new advances in brain surgery, experts said that navigational assistance and endoscopic surgeries help in performing the surgery with greater precision while preserving vital brain tissue. This leads to better treatment outcomes and faster recovery for patients. The session also highlighted the importance of patient awareness, safety and informed treatment decisions.
