Kerala tops the country in rooftop solar power growth

Trivandrum: Kerala has emerged as the national leader in the annual growth rate of rooftop solar power plants, achieving a remarkable 99.97% increase over the previous year. This places the state at the forefront of India’s solar energy transition, according to a press release from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEBL).

The state’s success is also evident in its high installation rate under the national PM Suryaghar scheme. With 67.44% of applicants successfully installing solar power plants, Kerala is second in the country for its installation percentage and fourth in the total number of plants installed. As of July 31, 2025, 123,860 solar power plants have been installed in Kerala, generating 495.5 MW of electricity daily. These installations have provided a total of Rs. 869.31 crore in subsidies to 127,141 beneficiaries.

Ernakulam district leads the state with 22,067 rooftop solar plants connected to the grid, the highest number in Kerala. Other top-performing districts include Thrissur (15,417), Thiruvananthapuram (11,536), and Malappuram (9,849). To address a shortfall in applications in the districts of Idukki and Wayanad, KSEBL will launch a new campaign to promote solar energy.

The rapid growth in the solar sector has been significantly supported by KSEBL’s robust implementation systems, which include empanelling 1,210 distributors and assigning field officers in all districts to streamline the process. The state’s total solar power generation capacity now stands at 1684.47 MW. With 81% of this capacity coming from rooftop plants, Kerala also ranks first in the country for this category. In the last fiscal year, prosumers in the low-tension category generated 1,076 million units of electricity, feeding 816.41 million units back to the grid.
