Kerala schools to reopen in two phases from November 01

Trivandrum: After being closed for over one and a half years, schools in Kerala are set to reopen from November 01. This was decided in the review meeting of the Covid situation held today. However, the ban on in-house dining and service inside hotels and bars would continue for the time being.

Primary classes one to seven and classes 10 & 12 will start from November 1. Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan has directed to make preparations for the commencement of all classes from November 15 and to complete the preparations fifteen days in advance.

In a release, the Chief Minister said that health experts were of the view that primary classes should be opened first. The Department of Education and the Department of Health would hold a joint meeting to make the necessary preparations for the opening of schools. “It is also advisable to ensure that children with weakened immune systems do not have to attend school. The arrangements to be made when transporting children in vehicles need to be discussed. Precautions should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease when opening schools. Special masks should be prepared for children. Masks should be worn in schools as well.”

All classes of students who have been vaccinated at the college level will start from October 18. As announced earlier, the classes for final year degree and PG students will commence on October 04.

From next week, lockdown will be imposed in those wards with a weekly infection ratio greater than 10% as against the present 8%. A special drive will be conducted to identify and vaccinate those who have not been vaccinated as soon as possible, especially those over 65 years of age with the highest mortality rate. Public awareness campaigns will be intensified as the death rate is higher among those who have not been vaccinated.
