Trivandrum: The Tourism Department will organise the Kerala Boat Race League from August 11 to November 01, 2018 at 13 different venues spread over five Districts. This was announced by Tourism Minister, Shri Kadakampally Surendran at a press conference today.
“The Kerala Boat Race League will be a big boost for both Kerala Tourism and the snake-boat race festival. The Kerala Boat Race League will evolve into a world-class tourism product. The IPL-styled league would be organized in a manner that would provide an opportunity for tourists to capture the complete excitement of the snake-boat race. The government has been taking various new measures for achieving stupendous growth in Kerala’s tourism sector. For that, it was important that we came up with new tourism products”, said the Minister.
The Boat Race League will begin with the Nehru Boat Race Trophy on August 11 at Alappuzha Punnamada Lake. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race will be of qualifying nature and league matches will be held on the succeeding Saturdays by including the top nine teams from the qualifying race. The league will have a total of 12 games and will conclude on November 1 with the President Trophy Boat Race at Kollam.
The matches will be held at Punnamada, Pulinkunnu, Kainakari, Karuvatta, Mavelikkara, and Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district; Piravom, and Poothotta in Ernakulam district; Kottappuram in Thrissur district; Thazhathangadi in Kottayam district; Kollam; and Kallada in Kollam district.
Special arrangements and facilities will be provided to foreign tourists. The Kerala Boat Race League will include various boat races from five districts, excluding the ones that are held in relation to religious customs and traditions.
The prize money for the top three teams in each league match has been fixed at Rs 5 lakhs for the winner, Rs 3 lakhs for the runner-up, and Rs 1 lakh for the third spot. The final winner of the league will be receiving a prize money of Rs 10 lakhs.
