Trivandrum: BSNL Kerala circle will roll out 4G services this financial year. Telecom major Nokia would start the installation of about 2,200 4G sites covering all major cities across the State, from September and customers would be able to use 4G from December.
This was announced by R Mani, Chief General Manager of BSNL Kerala circle while briefing the media today. The BSNL Kerala circle has registered a net profit of Rs. 700 crores in 2016-17, the highest among all BSNL circles in the country. BSNL Kerala circle earned a gross revenue of Rs. 3,104 crores in the last fiscal as against Rs. 2,955 crores during the previous financial year. The increase in revenue and profit was mainly due to increase in business in the GSM (10%), Broadband, FTTH (43%) and Enterprise Business segments.
In the last financial year, 1,950 3G new mobile BTS and 117 2G sites were added to the network in Kerala taking the total number of 3G sites to 3,819 and 2G to 5,430. Old technology BTSs of Nortel and Motorola were replaced with state-of-the-art technology equipment of ZTE thereby improving quality and performance of the GSM network. 71% of the circle is now covered with 3G service and the target is to reach 90% by the year end. The Lakshadweep islands which are part of the Kerala circle will have 10 new 2G and 12 3G sites within three months, supported by a 300 Mbps backhaul via satellite, thereby drastically improving the net connectivity.
BSNL has introduced a slew of offers in the mobile prepaid segment to take on the private Telecom players and there has been a substantial increase in the business. To improve cashless transactions, 217 POS machines have been installed at Customer Service Centres across the State.
With the introduction of new plans, BSNL has been able to attract/bring back customers to the landline segment. At present 136 exchanges have been migrated to NGN technology which offers a host of value-added services and facilities. The minimum download speed has been increased to 4 Mbps for broadband plans of Rs. 675 and above.
