The event also marked the installation of Dr. Syed Ibrahim, Director of the German language and cultural centre Goethe-Zentrum since its opening here in 2008, as the first Honorary Consul of Germany to Kerala, by the German Consul General who administered the oath of office.
In his address, the Chief Minister said, “The opening of the German Honorary Consulate in Kerala will take the bilateral ties between Germany and Kerala to hitherto unscaled heights. The ties between Kerala and Germany go back several centuries. Germany finds a partner in India in general and Kerala in particular. The Kerala Government has a goal to transform Kerala into a developed State and we are committed to work towards this with the cooperation of all potential partners.”
In her remarks, Margit said, “Germany is the first European country to open an Honorary Consulate in State. We are proud to support your beautiful State to become a ‘green’ State. We chose to have an Honorary Consul in Trivandrum to further strengthen our presence in Kerala. Germany is keen to partner with Kerala in many aspects. The actions of the Honorary Consul would help attract more German companies and tourists to the State, provide expertise to city-specific challenges and opportunities for students interested in pursuing higher studies in Germany. His service would be of great help to German citizens visiting Kerala.”
Later addressing a press conference, Honorary Consul Dr. Syed Ibrahim said he would do his best to expand the scope of bilateral cooperation between Kerala and Germany, both in his role as the Honorary Consul and also as an honorary representative of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.
