Poovar Island Resort rolls out combined Solar & Wind energy generation


Trivandrum: Poovar Island Resort, a leading backwater property located at Pozhiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram District has commissioned a new combined solar and wind energy generation system. The combined energy generation system was inaugurated by the Minister for Electricity & Devaswom, Shri Kadakampally Surendran.

According to a press release from the company, this is the first time in Kerala that a combined solar and wind energy generation system is powering the functioning of a resort. The present capacity of the system that has been commissioned is 50 KW from solar and 2 KW of wind generation. From this first stage of power generation using the nonconventional energy, it is proposed to increase the capacity by adding further solar panels and windmills to render the resort ‘Energy Neutral’.

Briefing about the project, M R Narayanan, Managing Director of Poovar Island Resort informed that Poovar Island Resort is in the forefront of installing green and environmental-friendly systems and has commissioned a hi-tech polyhouse for growing of organic vegetables. The resort has already implemented various measures for the development of the community at Poovar thereby stressing on its commitment to Responsible Tourism. The Resort is also on its expansion process by introducing eight more Ayurveda cottages thereby increasing the number of rooms to 85.

Kabeer Khader, Chairman of Poovar Island Resort; R Suku, Chief Engineer, KSEB; V C Anil Kumar, Chief Electrical Inspector and Belsy Jayachandran, President of Kulathoor Grama Panchayat were present on the occasion.

Poovar Island Resort, a venture of Floatels India, was started in 1999 by Kabeer, an NRI based in Dubai and Narayanan, a technocrat industrialist. Built on 25 acres of lush green coconut gardens alongside the beach, the resort currently comprises of elegant land based superior rooms, built around the swimming pool on a natural lily pond and is unique in India for the floating cottages and villas which are afloat on the backwaters and face the sea.
