CII to promote food processing industry in Kerala


Trivandrum: With an endeavour of promoting Kerala as a ‘Safe to eat destination’, Confederation of Indian Industry, Kerala today organized a seminar on Branding Kerala – Safe Food Destination, with a focus on Food Safety and promoting the food processing industry in Kerala.

T V Anupama, Food Commissioner, Kerala spoke about different aspects of food safety and standard parameters and the need for industry to adhere to these standards to promote safe food in the State. Speaking about the food safety concerns, she said that many of the cases that are coming up are unintentional and therefore there is a strong need for the industry to be apprised with the latest regulations of the industry. While extending full support of the department she also invited industry suggestions towards the growth of this sector in Kerala.

Vinod Manjila, Convenor of the CII Kerala Food Processing panel & Partner of AJ Foods mentioned that the Food Processing industry has been one of the fast growing sectors in Kerala with many new players entering the industry in the recent times. This industry also accounts for large part of Kerala’s foreign earnings, through exports of its spices and other processed foods. The growing food processing industry in the State has also led to increasing concerns of food safety within the State and there is an urgent need to address this issue.

Shivdas Menon, Past Chairman of CII, Kerala called on the industry to keep aside some funds for quality maintenance which would make a big impact at a larger level. He mentioned that CII plans to engage with the regulatory authorities and the food experts in creating awareness about the regulatory norms of the industry as well as educating the industry on the best practices of the industry.

The session also included exclusive address by Dr K N Shashikanth, Senior Consultant, Food Safety & Quality, CII Food & Agriculture Centre of Excellence who spoke about capacity and capability building initiatives in Food Safety and Quality for Food Value Chain; Dr Anandavally, Food Safety consultant, World Health Organisation who spoke about Food Safety & regulations; and Sunil K Surendran, Brand Consultant who spoke on Safe Food Labels to win consumers heart.
