CII hosts session on Urban Development & Sustainable Growth

Trivandrum: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) & Trivandrum Agenda Task Force (TATF) organized in Thiruvananthapuram, a Session on Urban Development: Exploring Opportunities for Sustainable Growth.

Setting the theme, V K Mathews, Past Chairman, CII Kerala & Executive Chairman, IBS Group said, Trivandrum City Connect, a group of 12 associations including TATF, was working in this area with an aim to facilitate accelerated growth of Thiruvananthapuram. “One of our main objectives is to make the capital city a digital ready Corporation to connect and engage with citizens digitally. At the same time, as with any other Indian city, we also lack good basic infrastructure and we need to address this issue on a priority basis.”

Speaking about City Planning: a Clean & Green Approach and sharing his experiences in a journey towards a world class city, James Brainard, Mayor of Carmel, Indiana, a principal city in the Indianapolis area in the USA, said, his work as a Mayor for last 12 years was to promote the concept of traditional neighbourhood development with a set of guiding principles that would create a place for people to thrive and prosper. “We are working hard to make the environment better, with good roads and other world class basic infrastructure. Our key reforms included the purchase of hybrid and bio-fuel vehicles, increasing walk-able areas, the adoption of cutting edge technology for the city’s wastewater treatment, and a plan to decrease by-products in landfills, thus reducing carbon footprints.”

“The key to development of a city is out-of the-box thinking and planning in which the new civil structures blend with local environment to make life sustainable. It is unavoidable to have PPP model development but the whole process should be transparent”, added Brainard, who has served six consecutive terms as Mayor and was tapped to join President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. He is visiting ten different cities in India as part of his visit.

Andrea De Arment, Cultural Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Chennai; John Muthoot, Chairman, CII Thiruvananthapuram Zone & CMD, Muthoot Fincorp; and P Ganesh, Past Chairman, CII Kerala & MD, Glass & Glazing Systems; addressed the gathering.
