Kochi: The much delayed inauguration of the first phase of Rs. 2,000 crores SmartCity Kochi SEZ project being promoted by the Dubai based TECOM Group, will be held in mid December, 2015. This was announced by Chief Minister, Shri Oommen Chandy after a meeting of the Board of Directors of SmartCity Kochi here today.
Briefing the media, the CM said, “All pending issues regarding the SmartCity Kochi project have been resolved and all obstacles have been cleared. The launch of the second phase of the project will also take place along with the inauguration of the first phase. A convenient date, some time in between December 10th and 20th, will be decided mutually by SmartCity Kochi, TECOM and Kerala Government and this would be announced later.”
“The first phase would see the launch of a 6.5 lakh sq. ft. IT building in which about 6,000 direct job opportunities would be generated. 15 companies have so far shown interest in starting their operations in SmartCity Kochi. The foundation stone for the second building would be laid. In the second stage, buildings with 47 lakh sq. ft. area would be constructed by SmartCity Kochi and co-developers. The entire project would be complete by 2030”, the Chief Minister added.
Minister for Industries & IT, Sri P K Kunalikutty; Jiji Thomson IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala; Jaber Bin Hafiz, CEO, SmartCity Dubai; Baju George, CEO & MD, SmartCity Kochi; and Officials of the IT Department were present on the occasion. They also visited the construction site to get a first hand idea about the progress of the project.
It may be recalled that the inauguration of the first phase of the project had been put off time and again. It was to originally take place in January which was then postponed to June and then to end of August. The month of June saw the resignation of the project CEO, Gigo Joseph. Ever since the SmartCity Kochi project was announced in 2006, it has been mired in controversy. The project has moved at snail’s pace after the first foundation stone was laid in 2008.
