LNG Storage and Regasification facility goes live at HLL Lifecare

Trivandrum: HLL Lifecare Limited (HLL) is pioneering a green trend with the environmental friendly 39.5 m3 capacity Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Storage and Regasification facility, that will replace furnace oil with the cleaner LNG for fuelling burners, at their factory in Thiruvananthapuram today. The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister, Shri Oommen Chandy.

“HLL has set the mark in the state by installing the pollution free and cost effective facility in its factory,” said the Chief Minister. “The State had exempted LNG from Value Added Tax (VAT) in last year’s budget. We should make maximum use of it.”

He also expressed his concern over the other industries that have not come forward to make use of such facilities. “However, I am happy that HLL has come forward to take up the project within a short period of time. The residents were apprehensive on setting up this facility here. But, HLL has interacted regularly with them and convinced that LNG is a clean, safe and economic fuel that enables environment-friendly manufacturing operations.”

“We are proud to install this LNG Storage and Regasification facility in Thiruvananthapuram, the first of its kind in public sector organizations in Kerala,” said HLL Chairman & Managing Director, Dr. M Ayyappan. “LNG stored in the tank is converted into natural gas with the help of vaporizers in the system, controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller. This natural gas is used as fuel in the boiler and the steam generated is used for manufacturing operations.”

The storage facility and operations underwent several standards and safety clearances, particularly from the Petroleum Explosives and Safety Organisation, Nagpur. The technology for this innovative tank, which takes care of energy shortage, is provided by global industry leader and Turkey-based company Isisan.

“HLL’s unit at Peroorkada requires around 9 MT of LNG for its daily production operations. We purchase 240 metric tonnes LNG per year,” he added.

Shri K Muraleedharan, MLA; R K Garg, Finance Director, Petronet LNG; HLL Directors, Dr K R S Krishnan, Dr Babu Thomas, R P Khandelwal and P Sreekumar, HLL Senior VP were present at the inaugural function.
