Kerala Tourism bags twin honours at PATA Awards 2014

Trivandrum: Kerala Tourism has bagged two top honours at the prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Awards for this year. The State tourism department’s pioneering Responsible Tourism initiative in Kumarakom and its hugely popular online newsletter have won the PATA Gold awards.

As per an announcement from the Macau Government Tourism Office, which supports and sponsors the awards considered the benchmark for the global tourism industry, Kumarakom Responsible Tourism Project won in the Corporate Social Responsibility category while Kerala Tourism e-Newsletter received the recognition in the Marketing Media section. This is the second consecutive PATA Gold award for the Kerala Tourism e-Newsletter.

State Tourism Minister, Shri A P Anilkumar said, “This is a remarkable achievement for Kerala. We are proud of this top international honour, which will inspire us to continue our efforts in rural tourism development and also taking the brand of Kerala far and wide. Through the Kumarakom model, we have shown the world that it is possible to successfully link the local community with the hospitality industry and various government departments for empowering the people and developing an area while sustaining eco-friendly tourism.”

The awards will be presented on September 19 at the Diamond Island City Hall in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. The award ceremony will be attended by over 800 officials from the travel and tourism industry.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director, Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) hailed Kerala Tourism’s achievements as a “breath of fresh air to the Asia-Pacific region”.

Supported and sponsored by MGTO for the last 19 years, the PATA Awards recognise innovation and excellence in travel and tourism industry.

Suman Billa, Secretary, Kerala Tourism said, “We are humbled by the fact that Kerala has become a global leader and Kumarakom a global model in sustainable tourism. We were lucky to be the first Tourism Board in the country to take advantage of the internet technology to reach a global audience. The Kerala Tourism e-Newsletter has a worldwide subscription of over 90,000.”
