Munnar: The State Government will accord top priority to developing world-class infrastructure facilities in an environment-friendly manner at all tourist destinations in Kerala. This was announced by State Tourism Minister, Shri A P Anil Kumar after laying the foundation stone for a new four-storeyed guest house at Munnar today.
“The government is only following a policy of environment-friendly infrastructure development. The construction of the guest house will take place in a phased manner and the government will provide all necessary support to complete the project in a time-bound manner,” said the Minister.
The Kerala Tourism department has decided to construct the additional guest house with all state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of Munnar in order to offer more quality services to the tourists visiting the famous hill station. The new building will come up near the old guest house, which presently has only eight rooms.
According to the officials, the construction of the new guest house will be in three stages and it will have a total of 36 rooms in four floors. In the first stage, the works on ground and first floors will be completed. The new guest house will have conference rooms, modern kitchens and a high-end restaurant.
Meanwhile, the preliminary findings of a study conducted by the tourism department show that in the past three years, the total number of tourism units in Kerala has jumped from 3,100 units to 5,000 units. According to the Minister, one unit represents either a home stay, a house boat, a resort or a hotel. “Just look into the numbers and see the difference. It clearly shows that the investment in the tourism industry in Kerala, be it a home stay or a resort or a houseboat, has gone up drastically. Details of the study are awaited but the first report indicates that the tourism is growing like never before and investments are coming in”, he added.
