Trivandrum: Mercedes-Benz India in collaboration with the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill (GECBH) in Thiruvananthapuram today announced the introduction Advanced Diploma in Automotive Mechatronics (ADAM) course for engineering college students. This first-of-its kind initiative in South India is designed specifically to address the growing need for skilled resources in Automotive Technology using the latest state-of-art tools and equipment.
The Automotive Mechatronics course designed by Mercedes-Benz is currently run by two government polytechnics in Pune and Aurangabad since 2006 and 2009 respectively. This is the third public-private-partnership by Mercedes-Benz India.
The ADAM course will be offered under the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) of the College. The initial plan is to kick-start the course with a single batch of 20 students and the selection of candidates will be strictly as per merit in an entrance test conducted by the College under the supervision of Mercedes-Benz India.
Engineering Degree / Diploma holders are eligible to appear for the entrance test. Certificates for successful students will be jointly signed by Director of Technical Education, Kerala and Mercedes-Benz India. The unique aspect of the partnership is MBIL’s continuous involvement in planning the syllabus on modern automotive technology, supply of Mercedes-Benz training cars, training of GEC lecturers and supply of tools and equipment to the students.
Commenting on the association, Devdutta Chandavarkar, VP – After Sales, Mercedes-Benz India said, “We need qualified, industry-ready professionals for the rapidly growing luxury car market in the country. The prime reason behind starting this course was the scarcity of skilled automobile engineers, especially those who could work on modern cars with latest technology. With this course, engineering students will be trained on Mercedes Benz cars”.
Dr. J. Letha, Director of Technical Education said, “This is a commendable step taken by Mercedes-Benz India in order to offer an Advanced Diploma course in Automotive Mechatronics. This is a new field of specialization; emerging from the combination of mechanical, electrical, computer and applied control engineering. We are glad to be associated with this unique initiative. With this we expect to offer enhanced job opportunities for students from various engineering streams.”
