Trivandrum: Just days after the launch of the ‘She-Taxi’ project by Gender Park in the capital city, the Kudumbashree Mission has rolled out its latest initiative, ‘Kudumbashree Travels’ – a taxi service for women and elderly couples in Nano cabs driven by women.

Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy flagged off the first set of eight cabs of ‘Kudumbashree Travels’ at a function held in Thiruvananthapuram. In his inaugural address, the CM said that Kudumbashree’s remarkable activities have been keenly observed by other States also and they are a model worth replicating. He also inaugurated the life insurance policy for the Kudumbashree workers.

Social Welfare Minister Dr. M K Muneer said that this is yet another initiative by Kudumbashree to empower women and to support their entrepreneurship. The cars have been bought with the subsidy of Rs.50,000 provided by Kudumbashree along with a bank loan that was arranged for the cab owners who will also drive them. He requested the Chief Minister to arrange a parking facility for the ‘Kudumbashree Travels’ cabs at the Trivandrum airport.

K Muraleedharan MLA launched the call centre facility on 0471-2772200 to avail the service of Kudumbashree Travels.

In her report, K B Valsalakumari, Executive Director of Kudumbashree said, “This project is conceived as an enterprise model aiming to make women self-reliant by finding a source of income on their own. The call centre would coordinate their activities. All the drivers have undergone a seven-month training given by Kudumbashree and for security purpose, GPS facility and camera is installed inside the cabs.”

The service will be available from 6 am to 8 pm on all days from locations like railway station, bus station and Technopark. Some features of the cabs are computerised billing facility, a partition between the driver and passenger and display of a set of emergency numbers in the car. The project is being launched in association with Motor Vehicles Department, Kerala Police and Kerala Tourism.

The minimum fare is Rs.100 for up to 15 kilometres and thereafter Rs.9 for every additional kilometre. Kochi will be the next location for Kudumbashree Travels.
