Kovalam to host first open National Surfing competition


Trivandrum: India’s first ever official national Surfing and Stand up Paddle competition organized by Surfing Federation of India, the National Governing Body for Surfing in India, with the support of Kerala Tourism Department, will be held in Kovalam from May 3-5, 2013.

This event will have Surfing and SUP athletes from various cities of east and west coast of India competing against each other in various categories. The aim of the event is to promote the sport of surfing and Stand Up Paddling in India and to make Kerala as a premier surf destination in India. Over 100 Indian and Foreign Surfers will take part in the competition.

The event will also provide workshops, introductory classes on Surfing and Stand Up Paddle (SUP), giving an opportunity for any water sport enthusiasts to come and enjoy the new sport of surfing and it’s lifestyle.

According to the organisers, a place like Kovalam should easily attract a minimum of anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 number of audience over the course of three days, which is a great way to begin Surf tourism in Kerala.

The event will have judges certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA) to judge the competition and rank each surfer accordingly. This event will start the SFI ranking system for Indian athletes for future national and international surfing competitions.
