Trivandrum: The Chennai based KGS Group is ready to start the work on their Rs.2,000 crore proposed International Airport at Arnamula in Pathanamthitta District, in January, 2013. The Greenfield airport will be India’s first international airport to be started in the private sector. The company hopes to start the flight operations from the new airport in December, 2014.
Interacting with the media in Thiruvananthapuram, Gigi George, Managing Director, KGS Group said, “History is in the making when we start the work on the Aranmula Airport. All approvals and licences required for the airport have been obtained from the Union Ministries of Civil Aviation, Defence and Home Affairs and the State Government. The Environment and Forests Ministry has recommended clearance for the project and a final order is awaited soon.”
P T Nandakumar, Executive Director, KGS Aranmula International Airport said, “The airport will be come up on 500 acres and the runway will be 3,100 x 45 meters, which is designed to cater to Airbus A-320 and Boeing 747 type aircrafts. The terminal building is designed to handle 1,000 passengers at a time. Another 400 acres will be used to develop an aeropolis consisting of SEZ, three Star Hotels and a Shopping Mall, among other things.”
The new airport will cater to the expat population from the Central Travancore region and is expected to serve Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki and Kottayam districts of Kerala. The airport will also service pilgrims bound for Sabarimala. The airport will generate direct employment for about 1,500 persons and more than 6,000 indirect jobs.
“The Kerala Government is expected to participate in the project with a minority stake. A sweat equity of 10 percent and Chairmanship has been offered and we expect a favourable announcement soon”, Gigi added.
Malaysian Airport Holdings Berhad is the technical and strategic partner for the Airport while the master plan and the airport design has been done by AECOM. The traffic and financial analysis report was prepared by Ernst & Young.
