KELTRON bags DRDO order worth five crores

Trivandrum: The Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON) has received an order worth Rs.5 crores for the production of Towed Sonar Receiver Arrays designed specifically by the Defence R & D Organisation (DRDO). The Array system will be manufactured at the exclusive towed array assembly and testing facility at the Aroor unit of Keltron near Kochi.

Keltron has been manufacturing various types of Sonar systems designed by the DRDO’s Naval unit, Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory at Kakkanad in Kochi which are meant for use by Indian Navy in their Ships and Submarines. Sonar systems are the eyes and ears of the ships and submarines like Radars to aircrafts. India is now depending on the foreign manufacturers for the Sonar systems. Keltron has now set up a dedicated production and testing facility for the Wet End Array, the most sophisticated and complex part of the system. This facility could also be used by the Indian Navy to repair the imported arrays being used by them.

According to C Prasannakumar, Managing Director, KELTRON, the centre will be equipped with more facilities to ensure a world class production and servicing facility to meet the Naval requirements.

The Sonar system parts, wet end towed arrays and the processing electronics systems manufactured and supplied by the Aroor Unit of Keltron in accordance with the design of NPOL, enables substantial saving on the imported cost.
