Trivandrum: The Chennai based supermarket chain, Nilgiris, is making slow inroads in Kerala and is setting up their stores across the State. The supermarket chain today opened their seventh store in Kerala, its fifth in Thiruvananthapuram. The new supermarket was inaugurated by Adv. K Chandrika, Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram. The other two stores are in Kochi.
Nilgiris is also one of the oldest supermarket chains in India with origins dating back to 1905. Also, unlike almost all other supermarkets and grocery shops in India, Nilgiris sells its own products among other brands from their Nilgiri Dairy Farm, which specialises in dairy, dairy products, bakery and chocolates.
Interacting with Kerala Biz News, Naveen Narayanan, Zonal Head – Kerala & TN, Nilgiris said, “We are enthused by the response in Kerala and the Company will be expanding on a franchisee model here with Kochi and Kottayam being the next cities identified for growth. We are on the look out for enterprising entrepreneurs who can join us on our expansion plans. We need people who can manage and interact with 200 vendors and handle about 8,000 products”.
Prince Vinod, Managing Partner of Bhavan Traders, the franchisee of Nilgiris said, “We started our first Nilgiris Supermarket in Trivandrum about six months back and today we are opening our second store. That should speak for itself the growth of our business and the brand’s strength. This is also the first new generation retail store in this part of the city.”
In 2008, Actis, an UK based private equity investor, invested US$ 65 million in the Nilgiris Group in order to strengthen the group’s manufacturing and franchising operations in South India. This investment has given Actis a controlling interest of more than 51% stake in the Nilgiris group.
