DD Malayalam launches news webcasting & digital archives

Trivandrum: Doordarshan today launched the webcasting of its Malayalam news bulletins. The Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) is the first Regional News Unit (RNU) to start its webcasting. Shri S M Khan, Director General, Doordarshan News formally inaugurated the news webcasting at DDK, Trivandrum today.

Later, interacting with the media, Khan said, “The Malayalam news webcasting will benefit the large number of Keralites who stay outside Kerala, especially those who are abroad and cannot access the regular modes of transmission like terrestrial, digital or satellite. DDK Trivandrum is a pioneer in this initiative making it the first out of 29 RNUs across India to have its own news webcasting. This will go a long way in meeting the aspirations of Keralites.”

The Malayalam news bulletins can be accessed online at ddmalayalam.org or ddktvm.gov.in. Since its inception in 1985, DD Malayalam news has been popular and today, DDK, Trivandrum broadcasts six news bulletins everyday.

Earlier, he also launched the digitisation and storing of visuals in Doordarshan news, thus making a large repository of visuals available for public dissemination. The new news studio with new graphics and new colour scheme was also inaugurated today.

S Subramanian, Director – News, DDK, Trivandrum said, “The webcasting of news bulletins is an attempt by the public service broadcaster to cater to the new generation who may not watch news on TV. This will help us reach a wider audience.” Doordarshan has a reach of about 85% in Kerala.

Doordarshan plans to introduce the digital terrestrial transmission in Trivandrum within a year. There are also plans to start a 24 hours Malayalam DD News channel. DDK, Trivandrum has earned a revenue of about Rs.15 crores in the last financial year, making it the second Kendra after DDK, Mumbai in revenue generation.
