Kochi Muziris Biennale launches pioneering mobile app for public

Kochi: Filmmaker Aashiq Abu and his actress-wife, Rima Kallingal launched today a Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) mobile app that would provide the visitors all information on the venues, artists and seminars of the 108-day festival concluding on March 29.

Bringing information literally at one’s fingertips, the app has been designed by Sinergia Media Labs which is based at the Infopark here.

“The second edition of the biennale had brought a lot of innovative aspects, like this user-friendly app,” said Abu, who has actively supported KMB ’14 on the social media. “The KMB has influenced artistes like me; it is good to see that an event of this international scale tries to have a socio-political and democratic stand.”

At the function in the main Aspinwall House venue of Fort Kochi, Rima applauded the biennale organisers for “relentlessly working to get closer to the audience”, and launched the app saying, “Let’s get sharing”.

Apart from a map of the venues, the entire 100 works at the KMB ’14 have been charted out on the app available on iOS and Android. The details scroll on the screen corresponding to the visitor’s route, thanks to bluetooth ‘beacons’ which are placed at each art work.

So, when a visitor walks up to an installation, complete details on the artist and the artwork will pop up, in English or Malayalam, on the mobile, together with video links that feature interviews with the artist.

KMB’14 Director of Programmes, Riyas Komu said the Kochi Biennale Foundation was thrilled to add another dimension to a “people’s biennale”.

“In today’s technology-driven world, we are happy that we have another way to engage people in the activities of the KBF,” he said. “It is like carrying a catalogue on the biennale. You can accumulate information and send it to your friends and people can get constant updates on the KBF even after the biennale is over.”

Biennale foundation trustee and former RAW Chief, P K Hormis Tharakan was also present at the event.
