Mumbai: Furniture from the people, by the people for the people, captures the essence of Design Democracy, the first-of-its-kind initiative launched by leading Furniture & Home marketplace, Pepperfry.com. This is a furniture design competition which will open for Indians on this Republic day.
An open innovation and crowdsourcing challenge, Pepperfry’s Design Democracy is encouraging independent designers, students of design, art and craft, creative homemakers, people with a creative bent of mind, quirky individuals who wish to epitomize designs and anyone who wants to accept the challenge. Pepperfry will showcase the submited designs on its Facebook page (facebook.com/Pepperfry) with the appropriate credits, ensuring that the designers and their designs get wide visibility and recognition.
Through the ‘Design Democracy’ competition the brand will empower furniture and design enthusiasts across India to exercise their creativity and become a part of the Pepperfry furniture making process. This competition has three stages, in the first stage, Citius – the power rests with people, who can vote for their favourite designs by clicking on the ‘like’ button on Pepperfry’s Facebook page. The popular designs from this stage will then be shortlisted by a panel of leading names from the world of art and design in the next stage – Altius.Design Democracy will culminate in Fortius the final stage where the winners will be selected on the basis of commercial and technical feasibility of their designs.
The winning designs will be brought to life by Pepperfry’s assistance which will then go up for sale on the site. The designers will not only begin with a great start of having their designs going up for commercial sale, but will also be offered a democratic revenue sharing model on the pieces sold.
Ambareesh Murty, Founder & CEO, Pepperfry said, “Ideas know no boundaries and can emanate from anyone. India has an abundance of talent which is looking for a platform to showcase it. Pepperfry has always gone beyond the obvious to bring such talent to the fore, and this initiative is yet another first for India from us.”
Pepperfry believes that this is a unique proposition for both the country’s fledgling and budding designers as well Indian customers.
