UKTI conducts session on IT business opportunities in UK


Trivandrum: UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in association with the Nasscom Kerala Chapter organised a session in Thiruvananthapuram about the business opportunities in UK for the IT industries from Kerala.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is the UK government’s trade and inward investment arm that supports both companies in the UK trading internationally and overseas enterprises seeking to locate in the UK.

The programme started off with an interactive session with Dr Chris Moore, Technology Specialist, UKTI on the opportunities for Indian companies in the UK in the technology sector, especially in the areas of Big Data, Cloud Computing, Government (Public Sector) IT Opportunities and Cyber Security.

Chris is an ICT Sector Specialist at UKTI, working in the Information Economy Investment Team. In this role, he assists ICT companies to establish a presence in the UK. He has over 25 years’ experience in industry and has been responsible for 24 patents.

Giving details, Chris said, “Big Data, Cloud, Mobility and Social Media are changing the dynamics of IT infrastructure. UK is the largest data centre market in Europe with over 25% of the region’s capacity. It has a well developed eco system. UK’s Cyber Security market is one of the fastest growing sectors and has seen 40% growth from 2009. The Cloud Computing industry is expected to expand significantly in the next five years. Considerable opportunities also exist in creating digital services for Government.”

For the benefit of entrepreneurs, he also gave an idea about the startup ecosystem in UK. A large number of funding and collaboration possibilities exist as UK has well developed accelerator programmes and a strong VC community. “Innovate UK, the Government funded agency to drive innovation and technology development; IC Tomorrow and Catapults are some of the programmes available for entrepreneurs”, he added.

This was followed by session on ‘Setting up business in the UK – Business structure, taxation perspective and immigration guidance’ by Navinder Pal Singh Kalsi, Director of A D Themis & Co., an UK based accounting firm.

About 40 CXOs from different IT companies in Kerala including those from Technopark, Trivandrum, attended the event which wound up with a Q&A Session.
