Kerala IT exports grow by 25% in last one year: IT Minister

Trivandrum: IT exports from Kerala have grown by about 25% in the last one year. This was announced by the Minister for Industries & IT, Shri P K Kunhalikutty today while presenting a report card for his ministry for the last two years since the UDF came to power in Kerala.

The Minister also said that there was substantial employment generation in the IT industry during this period. “Development of the IT industry and e-Governance has been the thrust areas of our Government. As per the new IT Policy announced last year, new private IT Parks will be encouraged”, he added.

Giving details, P H Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary – IT said, “IT exports from Kerala was about Rs.3,500 crores last year. This year we are expecting a 25% growth. These figures are based on the exports as reported by STPI and the actual figures might be higher. Ten new private IT Parks will come up in Kerala – seven in Kochi and one each in Trivandrum, Kozhikode and Thrissur. The final decision on this is expected soon.”

In the last two years, 59 new companies have started in Technopark, Trivandrum and 53 in Infopark, Kochi. Most of them are start-ups. The IT industry has been able to creat about 15,000 – 17,000 new employment opportunities during this period. About 80,000 IT professionals are now working in Kerala – 40,000 in Technopark, 20,000 in Infopark and another 20,000 in other places across the State.

The Minister expressed his disappointment that the work on the SmartCity Kochi is not progressing as per the time frame set by Tecom, the promoters of the project. The masterplan is going to be finalised by June 30. The construction will be further delayed as environment clearance can be obtained only after the masterplan is finalised.

On the e-Governance front, the Minister said that the e-District project will be rolled out across all the 14 Districts in the State before March 31 and Kerala hopes to be a fully digital State in the next 2 – 3 years. e-Procurement and e-Payment has been introduced in several departments.
