Trivandrum: With an aim to promote the safe use of technology among women, the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing & Employment (SPACE), in association with the Government College of Women in Thiruvananthapuram and the Gender Park, is organising a seminar on Safe and Effective Use of Internet for Women on November 11, 2013 at the Government College of Women.
According to a statement from SPACE, the pervasive presence of information technology demands a new kind of awareness among women, for whom this technology has opened up new opportunities as well as challenges. Women have become victims to new forms of violence perpetrated by means of technology to the extent that it has escalated into a social issue which has unfortunately not been adequately addressed, as technology is something that confounds many people. This one day seminar would address this issue.
The seminar will be followed by a three day workshop which aims to empower girls in the use of information technology. About 20 students of the college will be given training in the various aspects of the Internet, including safe browsing and information sharing. These trained resources shall take forward the programme to cover all the students in the college in a phased manner.
SPACE is a registered society that has members from academia, the IT industry, professional societies such as IEEE and Computer Society of India, and the IT Administration of the Government of Kerala. The society works to promote the use of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) in the public, private, and governmental sectors as well as for personal / home use; develop a model for FOSS based employment generation that is appropriate to Kerala’s context, by identifying appropriate business opportunities and providing support services including training and micro business incubation; carry out R&D activities for the development of essential prototypes that bridge existing gaps in software, so as to enable widespread use of FOSS and ensure that Kerala is able to develop sufficient numbers of high-quality human resources in the FOSS domain.
The Gender Park has been newly set up by the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, to unify all activities in the State aimed at achieving gender equity.
